Sell Your Chametz Form

  • Delegation of Power for the Sale of Chametz

  • The selling of Chometz

    Why & How ?

The Torah forbids us from eating, seeing or owning Chametz during Pesach.

"For seven days Chametz shall not be found in your homes" (Exodus 12, 19).

After Passover, it is forbidden to eat or use Chametz that was not sold for the duration of Pesach.

Since it is prohibited to possess Chametz on Pesach, we need to sell to a gentile all Chametz that will not be eaten or burned before Chametz and all Chametz utensils which will not be thoroughly cleaned by then. These are stored away in closets or rooms while preparing for Pesach. Now we lock or tape shut the closets or rooms, and they are leased to the gentile at the time of the sale.

Since there are many legal intricacies in this sale, only a competent Rabbi should be entrusted with its execution. The Rabbi acts as our agent both to sell the Chametz to the gentile on the morning before Pesach starts and also to buy it back the evening after Pesach ends.

The contract for selling Chametz must be given to the Rabbi as soon as possible in order for the transaction to be arranged for Friday, Afril 15 th 2022

, (Erev Pesach) before 11:39 a.m.(NY) the time when we are forbidden to own Chametz.
